On the Right Track

Rick Best of Newport and Mary Joy Lu, CEO of Rail Explorers, pedal their custom-built rail bike along the Melville section of Portsmouth this week. Lu and her husband, Alex Catchpoole, an Australian couple, have come to Aquidneck Island via the Adirondacks with a business enterprise that may create as many as 40 new jobs while giving thousands the chance to pedal their way along the train rails that start in Newport and end at the Sakonnet River Bridge. If they can get on the right track and bring their venture to Aquidneck Island, unused tracks will be busy for the first time in decades. In their first year, 14,000 riders pedaled the neat-looking rail bikes along the 18 miles of rails from Tupper Lake to Lake Clear, New York. The number who rode the rails by pedal power increased to 22,000 last summer. Read more about the venture on page 17. (Photo by James Merolla)
