Staying true to the event name, and not wanting to disappoint those attending with their dance shoes, the 10-piece Brass Force, one of New England’s most popular dance bands, was center stage for the evening. Retired Newport police officer Jimmy Winters did steal the mic away for a couple of songs and received resounding applause.

Auction duo Emlen and Liz Drayton also entertained the NCCMHC well-wishers with their lively diatribe and skills to woo the crowd into donating thousands of dollars to the center.

On a more serious note, Jamie Lehane, president and CEO of NCCMHC, introduced guest speakers R.I. Senate President Teresa Paiva Weed and Congressman David M. Cicilline, who spoke of the importance the center plays in the community and the need for residents to have immediate access to mental health services.

“Rhode Island has cut tens of millions of dollars of support to community based mental health services to the extent that the state now provides zero state funding for community mental health… The only state funding that pays for community behavioral health services is Medicaid dollars,” Lehane said.
