Cute as a Pumpkin

Martin Cardona of Pawtucket rests his legs recently after picking apples with his family at Sweet Berry Farm in Middletown. It’s that time of year when everything, from cheesecake to coffee to candles, cannot be sold – or even taken seriously – without a touch of the pumpkin in it. The largest pumpkin ever recorded in North America, which topped the scales in 2015 at 2,230.5 pounds, is a Rhode Island pumpkin – grown on a farm in Warren. Pumpkins have been known to capture the imagination, from Cinderella’s carriage to the charmed pumpkins behind Hagrid’s hut in Harry Potter, to Linus’ beloved Great Pumpkin. For local pumpkinistas, Trinity Church’s eighth annual Pumpkin Patch opens Saturday, Oct. 8, at Queen Anne Square in Newport, and will continue through Halloween.
