Trees from Seed

Whether you’d like to plant native trees in your own yard, or help propagate seedlings to be planted in Newport’s parks and along our streets, your help is needed. Learn how to propagate, and become a Newport Arboretum Propagation Partner.

A three-class propagation seminar begins with a seed collection day at Portsmouth’s Oakland Forest & Meadow Preserve on Saturday, Oct. 1, from 9 a.m. - noon. This class will include the identification of native trees, seed collection protocols, testing for seed ripeness, and some opportunistic seed collection along the trails. The second class will be Wednesday, Oct. 12, at Salve Regina and will discuss the life of a seed and the ways in which seeds stay dormant until conditions are right for germination. The final segment is planned for February. For tickets and to register, email newporttreesociety@gmail.com.
