Cruise Ships and Bridge Repairs Return

RMS Queen Mary 2, the flagship of the Cunard Lines, sits at anchor in Newport Harbor on Wednesday afternoon. With a crew of 1,253 and a passenger capacity of 2,695, this Queen, the largest ocean liner ever built, has 15 restaurants and bars, five swimming pools, a casino, and a planetarium. Launched in 2003, it cost $900 million to build. In the next week, the harbor will host eight additional cruise ships. The nearby Newport Pell Bridge was completed in 1969 for $55 million. With an estimated replacement cost today of $1.5 billion, it is the longest suspension bridge in New England. RITBA officials are advising residents to be prepared for lane closures as the latest round of bridge repairs begins. On Sunday, Oct. 23, the span will be the venue for the fifth annual Citizens Bank Pell Bridge Run. (Photo by Kirby Varacalli)
