Dance Ministry

A dance ministry combining singing, poetry, flag pageantry, and dance will be presented Friday, Sept. 30, at 7 p.m. at the Community Baptist Church, 50 Dr. Marcus Wheatland Blvd. The event is open to the public and will benefit the Arroyo/Morales family. St. Joseph’s Concert

Vocalist Stephanie Tierno will be in concert at St. Joseph’s Church on Saturday, Oct. 1, at 7:30 p.m. With her accompanist, Denis Tetrault, she will perform selections by Rossini, Schubert, Dolly Parton, Andrew Lloyd Webber and more. Newport Havurah High Holiday Services

The Newport Havurah is a member of the Union for Reform Judaism. The Havurah celebrates the Sabbath and holidays through services conducted by members, with good food and a friendly, familial atmosphere. High Holiday Services will be held at the Newport Historical Society Meeting House at 82 Touro St. Parking will be available behind the Great Friends Meeting House, 21 Farewell St. No tickets are required to attend these services. The schedule is as follows:

Rosh Hashanah, Oct. 2-3 Erev Rosh Hashanah, Sunday, Oct. 2, 7:30 p.m. Rosh Hashanah morning service, Monday, Oct. 3, 10 a.m.

Yom Kippur, Oct. 11-12 Erev Yom Kippur/Kol Nidre, Tuesday, Oct.11, 7:30 p.m. Yom Kippur, Morning Service, Wednesday, Oct. 12, 10 a.m. Yom Kippur, Afternoon Service, Wednesday, Oct.12, 4:30 p.m. (Yizkor and concluding service). ‘Gospel living in Daily Life’

An adult six-week Bible study, “James – Gospel Living in Daily Life,” begins on Tuesday, Oct. 4, at the United Baptist Church, 30 Spring St. The study will be from 7 - 8:30 p.m. and led by retired Naval Chaplain Doug Rosander. Noam Chomsky Seminars

Professor Henry Rosemont, Visiting Professor of Religious Studies, Brown University will present four seminars on the work and philosophy of Noam Chomsky. The first two sessions will deal with Chomsky’s work with linguistics and philosophy. The final two sessions will focus on Chomsky’s views on aspects of domestic and foreign policy. Each session will include a brief lecture, video clips of Chomsky’s lectures and interviews, as well as Q & A. The seminars will take place on Tuesdays, Oct. 4, 11, 18 and 25, 7-9 p.m., at Channing Church’s parish hall, 135 Pelham St. Registration is $ 5 for each lecture and $15 for the series. Warm-Up Wednesday

Warm-Up Wednesday resumes on Oct. 5 at St. Paul’s United Methodist Church, 12 Marlborough St. Enjoy light refreshments, hot coffee and tea each Wednesday afternoon from 1-4 p.m. Puzzles, board games and art activities are available. Join in lively conversation or find a quiet corner for rest and relaxation in bright and spacious Barber Hall. All are welcome. 401-846-0966.

Chamber Concert Features Newport String Project

The Newport String Project will be the featured ensemble for the first Chapel Chamber Music concert at St. Mary’s Church, 324 East Main Road, Portsmouth. Violinists EmmaLee Holmes-Hicks and Ealain McMullin will be joined by guest artists Tanya Maggi, viola, and Heath Marlow, cello. The concert will be held on Saturday, Oct. 8, at 7 p.m. Admission at the door: $20 adults, $10 students under 18. St. Mary’s Church office: 401-846- 9700.

PUMC Worship Schedule

Portsmouth United Methodist Church, 2732 East Main Road, offers several services: a Saturday evening informal interactive service at 5 p.m.; a Sunday traditional worship service at 9 a.m. featuring a choir; and their new contemporary worship service beginning on Sunday, Oct. 9, at 10:45 a.m. The contemporary service will include a live praise band, contemporary music and a sermon. A fellowship hour follows both Sunday services, and Sunday school and nursery services are offered to meet the needs of young families. 401-683-4005.
