George Manton Chaplin, 93, passed away Sept. 12, 2016 at Newport Hospital. He was the husband of the late Dorothy C. (Harlow) Chaplin. He leaves behind his two daughters, eight grandchildren, and 12 greatgrandchildren. He was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II. He was ordained an Episcopal priest and served St. Mark’s church in Warren for 20 years. During his retirement he served as minister at the Church of Holy Cross, Middletown. A memorial service in his memory will be held on Saturday, Oct. 22, at 11 a.m., at St. Mary’s Episcopal Church, Portsmouth.

Margaretta Katherine (Kenney) Landry, 87, of Newport, passed away Sept. 18, 2016. She was the wife of the late Francis Deven Landry. She leaves behind six children, seven grandchildren, and five great-grandchildren. Donations in her memory may be made to St. Joseph’s Church, Newport.

Cdr. Walter Jenkins Whitley, USN Ret., 92, of Newport, passed away Sept. 9, 2016 at the Grand Islander Center, Middletown. He was the husband of the late Susanne Williams Park. He leaves behind his children, George L.G. Whitley IV (Madeleine) of Mass. and Portia Bonner Whitley of Newport. Every 4th of July, for more than a decade, he proudly read the Declaration of Independence from the Colony House steps, a tradition that has been kept since it was first written. A memorial service will be held at a later date to be announced. Donations in his memory may be made to Trinity Church, One Queen Anne Square, Newport, RI 02840.
