Ripe for the Pickin'

Salve freshmen Jaqueline Picard (left) and Kelly Belsito pick ripe cucumbers as part of harvest time at God’s Community Garden, a nonprofit charitable group, sponsored by the United Methodist churches of Aquidneck Island. The fresh vegetables are distributed to island seniors and neighbors in need. According to Garden Director Linda Wood, “We had the great assistance of approximately 120 Salve Regina University students in the past week who were performing an Exploratory Day of Service in our gardens and greenhouses. The students helped us with weeding, gardening and harvesting our vegetables.” The garden is expected to produce about 5,000 pounds of fresh vegetables, including cucumbers, tomatoes, green peppers and more. To pick up fresh vegetables, visit the farm stands at St. Paul’s United Methodist Church in Newport, Calvary United Methodist Church in Middletown, or Portsmouth United Methodist Church on Wednesdays, 10-11:30 a.m. St. Paul’s in Newport also has their farm stand open from 4-5:30 p.m. on Wednesdays for added distribution.
