Bird Ball Moves to the Beach

Sue and John Reid Sue and John Reid “Moonlight Over Paradise” surely created lasting memories for the Norman Bird Sanctuary’s 11th anniversary Bird Ball at Third Beach on Aug. 20. More than 300 guests enjoyed a spectacular evening under the light of the full moon, delighting in the casual elegance of an open-air cocktail bar, feasting on a delectable dinner by Blackstone and taking in the ambiance of the surrounding natural beauty of the beach.

Local celebrity auctioneers Emlen and Liz Drayton stirred up the crowd with one-of-a-kind offerings such as dinner for eight on Hanging Rock, a beachside dinner party on the sanctuary’s own Third Beach, an overnight getaway to the iconic “House on the Rock,” Clingstone, and an original painting created especially for the occasion, “Moon over Hanging Rock,” by renowned local artist Sue McNally that sold for $7,000.

As the moon rose higher in the night sky, DJ Butch, always a Bird Ball favorite, kept the dance floor hopping throughout the evening, with some guests kicking off their flip-flops to dance in the sand at the water’s edge.
