Racing to Summer's End

Nineteen years after they last raced in Newport, the 49er class returns to the waters of Narragansett Bay on Friday, Aug. 26, for the 2016 49er and 49erFX North American Championships. In 1997 the inaugural competition was held in Newport, with class stalwarts the McKee brothers and Morgan Larson among the sailors racing. This year the group returns to where it all began, with teams from the U.S. and Canada lining up for three days of racing. The event is being hosted by Sail Newport. The days may be getting shorter but there is still lots of sailing activity scheduled. The Classic Yacht Regatta, hosted by IYRS, is scheduled for Sept. 3-4; Foiling Week is on the calendar for Sept. 8 - 11; the Sail for Hope, a fundraiser that takes the boats around Jamestown, takes place on Oct. 15; and the Halloween Howl is on Oct. 29-30.
