Decade Milestone for Rock the Docks Fun and Fundraiser

Lorraine Whittemore, Skip Schaum and Tod Whittemore Lorraine Whittemore, Skip Schaum and Tod Whittemore The Seamen’s Church Institute’s 10th annual Rock the Docks fundraiser took place at Newport Shipyard Aug. 14. With clear skies, a southwesterly breeze and the sounds of steel drum music, it was a beautiful night for the institute’s traditional lobsterfest fundraising event. A record number of guests attended and the atmosphere was festive as folks enjoyed oysters from the raw bar and mingled amid a backdrop of yachts – a fitting scene for Seamen’s maritime-related mission.

For 97 years, Seamen’s has provided assistance to mariners and Newport residents, serving more than 30,000 people annually. The organization relies heavily on the Rock the Docks event to raise necessary operating support to carry on its waterfront mission. Charismatic auctioneer Peter Gerard did his part selling vacation stays in Scotland and Buenos Aires, a Caribbean cruise, and local artwork.

Joan and Michael Beachnau Joan and Michael Beachnau As per tradition, the organization’s board of directors worked behind the scenes to solicit sponsorships and in-kind donations. They even donned chef jackets for the evening, serving lobsters, busing tables and cleaning up at the end of the night. Superintendent Rebecca Pierce reports the night was a great success.

Upcoming events for SCI include a Speakers Series, exploring maritime topics, to be held the second Wednesday of each month at 7 p.m., starting in September. In addition, the Naval War College Museum will hold its Eight Bells lecture series at SCI the first Thursday of every month, at noon, beginning Sept. 1.
