Ready, Aim, Celebrate!

The Town of Middletown was founded on Aug. 24, 1743, by order of the Rhode Island General Assembly, and the Middletown Historical Society is celebrating that occasion and the society’s 40th year with an inaugural Founders Day Celebration on Saturday, Aug. 20, at Paradise Park from 11 a.m.- 4 p.m. The 1810 Boyd’s Windmill will be under full sail, the Navy Band and Lois Vaughan Jazz trio will perform, the Sons of the Union Civil War Veterans will have their camp set up (complete with cannons), and the Newport Artillery will represent the Revolutionary War. Exhibits will feature antique engines, tractors and farm implements. Presentations will include “Under the Petticoats,” which will examine the more intimate details of daily life, from the number of undergarments a woman wore beneath her dress to chamber pot protocol. Picnics welcome; chairs suggested. According to organizers, there will be plenty of food, including johnnycakes. (Photo by Kirby Varacalli)
