Warwick Coyote Attack

According to published reports, a Warwick woman who is a resident of the Cowesett Hills apartment complex was bitten on both legs by a coyote during the early evening hours of Sunday, August 7, while walking her two pet Pugs. The victim began the rabies vaccine protocol on Monday, Aug. 8.

Warwick Police responded to the area and within 24 hours located and euthanized the coyote. The animal was taken by authorities to be tested for rabies. Late Wednesday afternoon, Aug. 10, officials confirmed the coyote tested positive for rabies.

In the wake of the attack, several residents of the complex reported close encounters with coyotes during this time period. Residents have been warned to avoid isolated areas around the complex and not to leave out food or unsecured garbage containers.

Coyote rabies are very rare in the Rhode Island area, with the last reported case occurring in Warwick several years ago. –Jack Kelly
