Master Gardeners Open House

The public is invited to attend the URI Master Gardeners first open house along the Newport Harbor Walk on Saturday, Aug. 20. The free guided walks are approximately 1 1/2 miles long and will leave from Perrotti Park at 9 a.m. and 11 a.m.

Highlights of the walk will be the five dinghy planters placed by Newport Friends of the Waterfront and planted by the URI Master Gardeners. Three of the repurposed dinghies are planted with native and ornamental plants in ocean colors. Two new dinghies this season provide a welcome habitat for the endangered Monarch butterfly and other beneficial pollinators. In an effort to provide high quality nectar for their southern journey, these dinghies feature three types of goldenrod, sneezeweed and ironweed, all native to Rhode Island.

There will be a Master Gardener at each dinghy location to answer questions about the plants, large container gardening and native species. The guided walks are one way, ending at King Park where refreshments will be served.
