Miantonomi Exploration Days

The Miantonomi Park tower will be open on Sundays, Aug. 14, 21, and 28 from 11 a.m.-2 p.m. as part of the second annual Miantonomi Exploration Days. A World War I memorial, the 100-foot stone tower, completed in 1929, was designed by William Kendall of the renowned architectural firm McKim, Mead & White. The interior stone steps lead to a narrow metal staircase that ascends to the top observation deck. Located on the highest point in Newport, views of Providence and Block Island are common on clear days.

Miantonomi Hill, once the seat of power for the Narragansett Indians, has housed Colonial beacons and Revolutionary War fortifications. With the assistance of the Aquidneck Island Land Trust, Sunset Hill (once known as Little Tonomy), with its Revolutionary War earthen redoubt, has been added to the park.
