Wet Paint at NAM

The Newport Art Museum will be holding its annual Wet Paint Weekend next Saturday and Sunday, August 13-14. Now in its 23rd year, the art-auction fundraiser has become what the museum calls a “marquee event” in Newport’s summer schedule, and rightly so. The only requirement for submissions is that they be pleinair scenes of Newport in the summer, and so recently executed that the paint supposedly hasn’t had time to dry. Artists who sign up for Wet Paint must deliver their freshly painted canvases (a most recent work is also allowed) by 3 p.m. on Saturday.

The Saturday evening preview party, from 6:30-8:30 p.m. will open the bidding for the silent auction. The silent auction bidding will resume on Sunday at noon and continue until 3 p.m., with food and music available. A live auction will begin at 4 p.m., with a small selection of items from the silent auction juried in. Proceeds from Wet Paint benefit the museum’s education, exhibition, and community outreach programs. The museum welcomes participants of all ages and styles; last year, according to the website, “the 500 participating artists ranged in age from five months to spry nonagenarians!”
