Praying for our Country

Members of the clergy and the community are invited to join in prayer for our nation at noon on Thursdays through the presidential election in front of Newport City Hall, Broadway. Pastor Hoffman of Evangelical Friends Church and Pastor Steve Robinson of CrossPoint Church are spearheading this initiative. Church Bazaar

Jesus Saviour Church will hold its annual summer bazaar from Thursday, July 28-Saturday, July 30, from 7-11 p.m. 401-847-1267.

Hellenic Fest

St. Spyridon Greek Orthodox Church will hold its annual Hellenic Fest on Friday, July 29, 4 p.m.-midnight; Saturday, July 30, noon-1 a.m.; and Sunday, July 31, noon-6 p.m. St. Spyridon is located at the corner of Thames and Brewer streets. 401-846-0555, hellenicfest.org.

The Well Coffeehouse

The Well is a once-a-month Christian coffeehouse held at The Annex, 40 Marcus Wheatland Blvd., from 7-9 p.m. All are welcome. The next coffeehouse will take place on July 29. For more information, email wellcoffeehouse@gmail.com.

Yard Sale for a Cause

A yard sale to help raise funds for the poor children in the Philippines will be held at St. Lucy’s Church, 909 West Main Road, Middletown, on Saturday, July 30, from 8 a.m.-4 p.m. Proceeds will go to ANCOP (Answering the Cry of the Poor) charity. Worship Service of Mime, Drama and Celebration

On Sunday, July 31, during the 9:30 a.m. service, the King’s Clown Troupe from Prince of Peace Lutheran Church in Clifton Park, N.Y., will present a unique worship service of mime, drama and celebration at St. Peter’s Lutheran Church, 525 Broadway. Royal School of Church Music

The Royal School of Church Music will hold its seventh annual summer course in Newport from Aug. 1-7.

For boy and girl choristers as well as adult musicians, this course provides the opportunity for choral training and explores wonderful choral music in liturgical settings.

Walden Moore, director of music at Trinity Church on the Green in New Haven, Conn. and Lecturer in Organ at Yale Institute of Sacred Music, will serve as musical director. Jason Roberts from St. Bartholomew’s Church in New York will return as organist.

Only six courses are offered throughout the U.S. this summer and this year’s will be the largest ever.

The public is invited to attend any of the four services offered throughout the week. The combined choir of 150 singers will participate in a hymn festival, and hold services of Evensong and Choral Eucharist, singing the music of five different composers. Events as follows:

Summer Beach Worship

Portsmouth United Methodist Church is holding summer beach worship on Sundays through Aug. 28, from 8-8:40 a.m. at Third Beach across from the north lot (820 Third Beach Road, Middletown). Bring a beach chair and/or blanket and sunscreen. 401-683-4005.


Trinity Church, Queen Anne Square, will offer Compline on Sunday, July 31, at 7 p.m. This ancient service, sung by members of the Trinity Choir, offers a rare opportunity for deep spiritual contemplation and meditation. Compline stems from the earliest traditions of the church, combining darkness and light, silence and sound, spoken word and beautiful music. 401-846-0660.

Worship on the Lawn

Emmanuel Church, 42 Dearborn St., will continue to hold its 10 a.m. Sunday service on the lawn through Sept. 4. In case of inclement weather, the service will be moved to All Saints Chapel. The next outdoor service will be held on Sunday, July 31. 401-847-0675.

On Tuesday, Aug. 2, at 5 p.m., Emmanuel Church, 42 Dearborn St., invites everyone in the community to enjoy a home-cooked meal. 401-847-0675.

Yard Sale

The annual WELCA yard sale will take place on the grounds of St. Peter’s Lutheran Church, 525 Broadway, on Saturday, Aug. 6, from 9 a.m.-1 p.m; rain date is Saturday, Aug. 13, from 9 a.m.-1 p.m. 401-846-9567.

‘Mass on the Grass’

Gospel Music Festival

Portuguese Cultural Festival

The Vasco da Gama Portuguese American Charitable Society of Newport will host a Portuguese Cultural Festival on Sunday, August 14, from noon-4 p.m. on the hall grounds located at 15 Fenner Ave. 401-846-0913.
