Folk, Jazz & Everything In Between

“The Newport Folk Festival is one of my very favorite festivals in the entire world,” said NPR commentator Bob Boilen on Tuesday of this week, “because the people are great, the music is amazing and things happen at Newport that happen nowhere else.” This year’s dates are Friday, July 22 through Sunday, July 24, and the lineup includes (in no particular order) Norah Jones, Elvis Costello (insert), Patti Smith, and Alabama Shakes. The Jazz Festival will run next weekend, Friday through Sunday, July 29-31. Opening night headliners will be Chick Corea and Gregory Porter. Linking the two weekends will be BridgeFest, now under the auspices of the Newport Festival Foundation. Rolling Stone Magazine has called the Folk Festival “the world’s most storied . . . filling the small beach town of Newport with many of the best musicians in the country.” For information, go to newportfolk.org, newportbridgefest.com, or newportjazzfest.org.
