U.S. Navy Presents Public Service Award

Former Newport Mayor David Gordon was presented with the Department of the Navy Meritorious Public Service Award by Rear Admiral P. Gardner Howe III, USN, the 55th President of the Naval War College, on June 14 at a dinner held at Rosecliff. The event was held in honor of the Naval War College and was sponsored by the Naval War College Foundation.

The award citation accompanying the bronze medal read in part:

"For nearly three decades, the Honorable Davis S. Gordon has demonstrated incredible generosity and steadfast devotion to the mission and goals of the United States Navy and the Naval War College. He has also contributed to numerous community groups and organizations in the Newport area, thus enhancing the environment in which War College students, staff, and faculty work and live.

Mr. Gordon recognizes that American military and diplomatic activities take place around the globe on a daily basis, and that the education and preparation of the men and women who conduct the nation’s business must be of the highest caliber.

David S. Gordon is truly deserving of the recognition afforded by awarding of the Navy Meritorious Public Service Award.
