Local Kids Score Big at Jr. NBA Hoops

Seven qualifiers representing the Newport Recreation Department competed this month at the Jr. NBA National Skills Challenge Regional Competition in Stamford, Conn.

Three of the seven – Ryan Sullivan, boys age 9-10; Maeve Crowley, girls age 11-12; and Gavin Jenkins, boys age 11-12, each finished in first place in their respective divisions. B.J. Jenkins finished second in the boys 13-14 division. The challenge involves dribbling, rebounding and shooting from various spots on the floor.

Each player is given one minute to score as many points as possible. The players were assisted by Meggie O’Connor, who won the Jr. WNBA national championship in Orlando, Fla. in 2010.

Ryan Sullivan, 10, of Middletown was notified that his score qualified him for an all-expense-paid trip for two to New York City this week.

Sullivan competed in the National Skills Challenge Championship on June 22 in New York. On June 23, he attended the NBA college draft as a guest of the Jr. NBA.
