For What It’s Worth

A recent house call revealed a mid- 19th century ancestral oil on canvas in the attic. A half century of hot and cold caused the lower half of the portrait to flake considerably, rendering the portrait of nominal value. The gilt frame perhaps might be worth $100 or so, but the portrait lost its value along with the flaking paint.
