Independence Day Celebration

Newport’s red, white and blue celebration begins at 9 a.m. on Monday, July 4, with the Newport Artillery Company of Newport marching to the gravesite of William Ellery, Rhode Island’s signer of the Declaration of Independence. Every holiday needs a parade, so bike enthusiasts of all ages can meet under the Liberty Tree in Ellery Park at 9:45 a.m. and bike to Washington Square, where the Newport Concert band will begin playing at 10 a.m. A pie eating contest will commence at 10:30 a.m. near the Oliver Hazard Perry statue. The true patriotic moment, however, will be when the Declaration is read from the Colony House steps at 11:15 a.m., followed by a Newport Artillery Co. 21-gun salute.
