Start the Summer Healthy

Celebrate the last day of school with a free summer kick-off party at the Florence Gray Center on Wednesday, June 29, from 3 – 7 p.m. The event is hosted by the Newport Health Equity Zone, an initiative dedicated to promoting healthy living in Newport, especially the North End and Broadway communities.

There will be a special guest appearance by the Big Nazo characters, free food, and a bouncy house. A nationally-recognized professional storyteller, Valerie Tutson, will be on hand. Other activities will include face painting, a petting pen with goats, arts and crafts, a self-defense demonstration, an obstacle course, and much more.

In addition, there will be a ribbon cutting for the unveiling of the brand new Wellness Hub in the Florence Gray Center, which will be one of two Wellness Hubs in Newport. The Wellness Hubs will host diabetes prevention programs, and will also facilitate other healthy living classes for the public to attend.

The Diabetes Prevention Program is a year-long program designed to help folks with or at risk for pre-diabetes. There are six months of weekly and bi-weekly meetings, followed by six months of monthly and twice monthly meetings. Meetings are an hour long and help participants to engage in a lifestyle change aimed at losing weight and delaying/preventing the onset of type 2 diabetes.

The class begins on Monday, June 20 and runs from 1:30 - 2:30 p.m. at the Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Community Center. Open enrollment ends on July 18.
