Bunting for the Opener

Blake Cairnes, a pitcher from the University of Georgia, puts down a bunt to advance a runner for the Newport Gulls, who opened up their 16th season in perfect weather at Cardines Field last week. Each home game has a theme and prizes, and Wednesday, June 15, was St. Joseph’s Parish Night. Guests from four area Catholic churches were on hand for the game against the North Adams Steeplecats. The Gulls won 11-4, knotting their record at 3-3 for the young season. Gulls’ players, hopeful of making the major leagues one day, come from far and wide – Kansas, Florida, Washington, California, and a dozen other states, but also feature local stars like Mark Powell of Middletown, who attends Bucknell University in Lewisburg, Pa. A highlight this season will be the New England Collegiate Baseball League’s Annual All-Star game, played in Newport on Sunday, July 17. The next home games will be on Friday, June 17; Monday, June 20; and Wednesday, June 22. (Photo by Jon Dilworth)
