What a Happening!

Mary and John Hirschboeck Mary and John Hirschboeck The “Hard Hat Happening” at the Opera House Theater was a huge success. More than 275 supporters joined together May 6 at the theater to celebrate the beginning of the construction for the restoration of the Newport Opera House Theater and Performing Arts Center.

Larry Brown’s Swinglane Orchestra entertained with an upbeat arrangement of music throughout the night as guests enjoyed beverages, the signature “Jack Hammer” cocktail, and creative construction site-inspired hors d’oeuvres prepared by Blackstone Caterers. The evening even included a surprise “flash mob” of singers featuring members of the Roger Williams University Choir, with the special lead voices of Newport’s favorite singing policeman, Jimmy Winters, and the chairwoman of the Opera House Theater Board, Alison Vareika.

Earlier in the month, crews began the initial work on the exterior phase of construction. The old annex building used in the past for dressing rooms and storage has been torn down to begin the foundation and construction for the new wing, which will house dressing rooms, a Green Room, and an updated backstage with elements important to a modern theater.
