RECENT DEATHS

John Anthony Corr, 91, of Newport, passed away May 4, 2016. He was a U. S. Navy veteran and served during World War II. A Mass of Christian burial was held for him at St. Mary’s Church, Newport.

Sandra Crump, 77, of Middletown, passed away May 8, 2016 at Philip Hulitar Hospice Center, Providence. She leaves behind her husband, Robert Crump; her children, Carolyn Bjork (Andy) of Newport and Steven Crump (Lisa) of Switzerland; and seven grandchildren. Calling hours will be Thursday, May 12, from 4 - 7 p.m. at the Memorial Funeral Home. A graveside service will be held May 13 at 11 a.m. at Newport Memorial Park. Mary Kardel Herterick, 90, of Middletown, passed away May 5, 2016. She was the wife of the late William M. Herterick. She leaves behind two children, seven grandchildren, and 12 greatgrandchildren.

Miriam “Mimi” (Dress) Lasky, 79, passed away May 3, 2016 after a long battle with lung cancer. She leaves behind her husband, Charles Lasky; her three sons, Marc, Jay (Heidi Werther), and Robert (Lisa), all of Portsmouth; one daughter, Marcia Haber (Larry) of Georgia; and nine grandchildren. Kyle James Mitchell, 23, of Portsmouth, passed away May 4, 2016. He leaves behind his parents, John and Anne Marie (Carey) Mitchell; a son, Landen James Mitchell; and three younger brothers.

Gary P. Smith, 76, of Middletown, passed away May 7, 2016. He leaves behind his wife, Frances A. Rodrigues Smith, two daughters, Holly Nobert (Richard) and Dawn Drake (Tod), and a granddaughter, all of Middletown. Calling hours will be Friday, May 13, from 4-7 p.m. in Memorial Funeral Home. A Mass of Christian burial will be May 14 at 10 a.m. at Jesus Saviour Church.

William E. Vareika, 89, of Tiverton, passed away May 6, 2016 at St. Anne’s Hospital, Fall River. He was the husband of the late Rita Keeley Vareika. He leaves behind four children, William Vareika (Alison) of Newport, Karen Vareika of Fall River, Marianne Vareika (Gregg Chiasson) of Tiverton, Diane McDonough (Dick) of Mass.; four grandchildren; and a great-grandson. CDR Ladimir Joseph “Joe” Zvanovec, USN, Ret., 87, of Newport, passed away May 5, 2016. He was the husband of Ann Zvanovec. He leaves behind three daughters and two grandsons.
