Around the Track, Around the Clock

The American Cancer Society’s Aquidneck Island Relay for Life fundraiser will take place on Saturday, May 14, from 10 a.m -10 p.m. at Gaudet Middle School in Middletown. The event is an opportunity for families and friends to celebrate the lives of loved ones lost to cancer, and to honor those currently engaged in fighting back.

To date, more than 250 people have signed up.

Highlights of the day, as participants walk around the track to raise money for the American Cancer Society, include a no-charge survivor and caregiver lunch at 11:30 a.m., sponsored by the Hotel Viking followed by the survivor/caregiver lap at 12:30 p.m. Music will include DJ Butch from 10 a.m.-2 p.m. and the Folsom Band (a Charlie Daniels Tribute Band) from 6-7 p.m. A vendor marketplace from noon to 5 p.m. will feature such items as skin care products, jewelry, and rosary beads. The Middletown Home Depot will present a children’s workshop for kids from 11 a.m.-1 p.m.

Also participating will be the YMCA and the U.S. Marine Corps, which will present its signature Cadence demonstration as well as a USMC obstacle course.

Other highlights: Luminary bags will line the track and be lit for the reflective lap in silence. And the “Mr. Relay” contest – always good for a laugh, say pageant organizers – open to male participants (dressed in gowns and vying for the coveted “Mr. Relay” award), will be at 9:00 p.m.
