The Newport Recreation Department is hosting the local segment of the all new Junior NBA National Basketball Skills Challenge sponsored by Verizon on Sunday, April 24.

The skills challenge is open to ages 9 through 14. There will be six first place finishers; boys and girls, ages 9-10, 11-12, and 13- 14. Each division winner will advance to the regional finals where they will compete for a chance to qualify for an all-expense paid trip to New York City and compete in the Junior NBA National Championship finals.

The skills challenge will be held at the Hut. It will consist of shooting, rebounding, and ball handling. Boy’s competitions will be held from approximately 1 - 3 p.m. and the girls will play from 3 - 5 p.m. There is no fee to compete, but each competitor must have a parent or legal guardian sign a letter of liability release from the NBA.
