CIVITAS and Fenian Award Winners

The Board of Directors of the Newport Irish Heritage Association has announced the recipients of the organization’s 2016 CIVITAS and Fenian Awards. The CIVITAS Award is presented to area residents who have, through their charitable and volunteer work, made positive contributions to the local community. This year’s recipient of the CIVITAS Award is John Dias, a retired Newport teacher, athlete, coach, and longtime member of the Vasco da Gama Society.

The Fenian Award, established in 2009, was created to honor an area resident who is of Irish descent and has made significant contributions to the Newport community. This year, for the first time, the Fenian Award is being presented to a couple, John and Carolyn Booth, for their work with many civic organizations, including the Museum of Newport Irish History, the Ancient Order of Hibernians, and the Hillside Charitable Organization.

Both awards will be presented on May 19, along with the Paul Crowley Newport Irish Heritage Award to a graduating senior who will be a college freshman in the fall, at a dinner at the LaForge Casino Restaurant. Tickets can be purchased by calling Kathy Creaney at 401-849-8956 or Jim Mahoney at 401-924-0284.
