Swing into Spring Touted as ‘Biggest and Most Successful’

Marilyn Warren and Heather Amaral Marilyn Warren and Heather Amaral Nearly 400 members of the Aquidneck Island community came out in full swing on Thursday, April 14, to support the Martin Luther King, Jr. Community Center at the 20th annual Swing into Spring fundraiser at the Newport Marriott. The event, which benefits hunger relief in Newport County as well as education and community programs serving approximately 3,000 local children, adults, and seniors each year, was sponsored by BankNewport.

According to Executive Director Marilyn Warren, “It was our biggest and most successful event thus far. The enthusiastic group raised close to $115,000."

It was a full evening agenda: cocktails and a silent auction followed by dinner and a live auction (kept even livelier with Liz and Emlen Drayton of Middletown fielding the bids), and ending with dancing to the music of Wayz & Means.

Co-chairs for the event were Wendy Kagan and Zulekha Ludwig. They were helped by a dedicated committee.

Juan Roldan and Rachel Nutt Juan Roldan and Rachel Nutt In addition to the big-ticket fundraising items (among them four field box seat tickets at Fenway Park on June 23, when the Red Sox take on the White Sox; tickets to all three days of the Folk Festival in July; and a catered dinner for 10), Swing into Springers could also purchase surprise balloons (for $25 each, which included such mystery gift certificates as lobster rolls for two at Easton’s Beach) or beach pails filled with toys which could be donated to children attending the MLK Summer Camp program. Even the exquisite floral centerpieces could be taken home for $25.

Coming up on the MLK spring calendar is the groundbreaking for the Community Garden at the Great Friends Meeting House on Saturday, May 14. Prior to that, on Wednesday, April 27, at 5:30 p.m., there will be a fundraiser for the garden, "Lettuce Turnip the Beet," at Caleb & Broad at 162 Broadway. Music, nibbles and cash bar. $20 per person.
