RECENT DEATHS

Mary (Roberts) Arruda, 90, of Newport, passed away March 29, 2016 at the Forest Farm Health Care Center, Middletown. She leaves behind her daughter, Patricia Paquette (Gregory) of Middletown, three grandchildren, and her “second daughter” Susan Batista of Newport. Donations in her memory may be made to Forest Farm Health Care Center Activities Fund, 193 Forest Ave., Middletown, RI 02842.

Ronald Leo Fredette Jr., 56, of Bristol, formerly of Newport, passed away March 28, 2016 at Newport Hospital. He leaves behind his wife, Barbara (Hunter) Fredette, and three children. Donations in his memory may be made to the American Cancer Society of Rhode Island, 931 Jefferson Blvd., Suite 3004, Warwick, RI 02886.

Becky Goodrich, 48, of Newport, passed away March 29, 2016. She leaves behind her son, Tyler Conlan. A memorial service will be held at a later date.

Sabina G. (Nina) Lonergan, 100, of Newport, passed away April 3, 2016. A Mass of Christian Burial was held at St. Augustin’s Church. Donations in her memory may be made to the St. Clare Home, 309 Spring St., Newport, RI 02840.

Dorothy C. Shaffell, 95, of Middletown, passed away April 3, 2016 at the John Clarke Nursing Center, Middletown. She was the wife of the late Robert J. Shaffell and mother of the late Elaine Beretta. She leaves behind her grandson, Robert Beretta, and a great-grandson. Calling hours are Thursday, April 7, at the O’Neill-Hayes Funeral Home, from 4 – 7 p.m. A Mass of Christian Burial will be April 8 at St. Lucy’s Church, at 9 a.m. Donations in her memory may be made to St. Lucy’s Church, 909 West Main Road, Middletown.

Dr. Eric John Shaw, Captain, USCG (ret.), 58, of Newport, passed away at home on March 29, 2016. He leaves behind his wife, Adrienne Corbeille Shaw, and daughter, Erin Rene Shaw. Professor Shaw joined the faculty of the Naval War College following his retirement from the U.S. Coast Guard as Captain of “America’s Tall Ship” Coast Guard Barque Eagle. Thomas Robert Weschler, Vice Admiral U.S. Navy (retired), 98, passed away April 3, 2016 in Mystic. He was the husband of the late Katrina Weschler. Following his graduation from the U.S. Naval Academy in 1939, he served in World War II and the Korean and Vietnam wars. In 1973, he moved to Newport where after his retirement he was a professor and head of the Global Strategy Department at the Naval War College. For the last 40 years of his life, he was passionate about Tall Ships America and Education under Sail. He brought the tall ships to Newport five times from 1982 to 2007. At the age of 90, he turned his attention and efforts to building a tall ship for Rhode Island and helped to raise more than $18 million toward the ship’s completion. The Oliver Hazard Perry, which he always felt linked Erie, where he began, and Newport, which he loved, was commissioned in July of 2013. He leaves behind his daughter, Katherine Williams; his son, Thomas Weschler (Mary); seven grandchildren; and seven greatgrandchildren. A Funeral Mass will be held at 2 p.m. on Friday, April 8, at St. Patrick’s Church, 32 East Main St., Mystic. A burial service will be held at the U.S. Naval Academy later this spring.
