RECENT DEATHS

Francoise (Devinck) Helme, 82, of Newport, passed away March 24, 2016 at the Grand Islander Health Care Center, Middletown. She was the wife of the late Ernest C. Helme, Jr. She leaves behind her son, Ernest C. “E.C.” Helme III (Hope), and a granddaughter, Hanna, of Newport. Calling hours will be Thursday, March 24, from 5-7 p.m. at Memorial Funeral Home. Donations in her memory may be made to the Potter League of Middletown, the Redwood Library of Newport, or the Preservation Society of Newport County.

Richard Moore Kelly, 75, of Portsmouth, passed away March 14, 2016. He leaves behind four children and five grandchildren. He owned and operated Benjamin’s and Poor Richard’s restaurants for more than 30 years. Donations in his memory may be made to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, 1 St. Jude Place Building, P.O. Box 1000, Dept. 300, Memphis, TN 38105.

Michael Thomas Leary, 71, formerly of Newport, passed away March 24, 2016 at the Rhode Island Veterans Home in Bristol. He was a U.S. Army veteran. Burial with Military Honors was held at the Veterans Memorial Cemetery, Exeter. Donations in his memory may be made to Wounded Warrior Project, P.O. Box 758517, Topeka, KS 66675.

Julie J. Peabody, 53, of Middletown, passed away March 12, 2016 at home. She leaves behind six children and nine grandchildren. She was the mother of the late Matthew Akucewich.

Anne E. (Daly) Quigley, 81, of Middletown, passed away March 24, 2016. She was the wife of the late Edward R. Quigley. She leaves behind five children, six grandchildren, and four great-grandchildren. Donations in her memory may be made to Lucy’s Hearth, 913 West Main Road, Middletown, RI 02842.

Ellen M. (Loftus) Swanson, 80, of Newport, passed away March 20, 2016. She was the wife of the late Captain Walter Theodore Swanson, Newport Fire Department (Ret.). She leaves behind four daughters, Margaret Upham (Bruce) of Middletown, Tricia Booth (Jim) of Portsmouth, Kate Wheeler (Rick) of Newport, and Ruth Cudworth (Ron) of Newport, and 12 grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren. Calling hours will be Sunday, March 27, from 4-7 p.m. at the Memorial Funeral Home. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on March 28 at 10 a.m. at St. Mary’s Catholic Church, Newport.
