Celebration of a Heritage

(Photo by Jack Kelly) (Photo by Jack Kelly) With winter finally coming to an end, it’s time to trade in the winter blues for the emerald green of Newport Irish Heritage Month. The month-long celebration is punctuated by Newport’s famed St. Patrick’s Day Parade on Saturday, March 12. And while parade day may indeed be an unofficial holiday on its own, there’s a whole lot more to March than just the march down Thames Street. Be sure to pick up Newport This Week as we cover the events of our community’s Irish heritage. Dancers of all ages can kick off Newport Irish Heritage Month on Sunday, Feb. 28. During Newport’s Gilded Age, Forty Steps was a gathering place for the Irish servants and laborers from the nearby mansions. Here they would hold weekend dances and play the Irish songs and music that reminded them of home.
