The Check’s in the Mail (Almost)

Brenda Neinhouse, executive director of the Newport Opera House and Performing Arts Center, spoke at the Jan. 19 monthly meeting of the Arts & Cultural Alliance of Newport County on the progress of the $14.6 million restoration project and its December 2017 completion date. A lot is happening behind the quiet façade overlooking Washington Square. Neinhouse announced that the first $1 million check (the initial installment of the total $4.2 million matching grant) from the State of Rhode Island’s Cultural Arts Facilities Bond is soon to be in the mail, and Executive Administrator Liz Drayton said construction is scheduled to begin in the spring. In the meantime, walls are coming down and memorabilia is being recycled: The final 250 movie theater seats have been donated to the Providence Public Schools, and parts of the “mighty Wurlitzer” are heading to the Zeiterion Theatre in New Bedford. “We are Newport’s modern history,” said Drayton. — BSW
