SPOTLIGHT ON LOCAL MUSICIANS

Meet Anthony Daniels
By Mark Gorman

There’s one local musician who built his guitar from wood reclaimed from an old sailboat he restored. And although the guitar looks a little funky, the sound it gives off is quite rich. Who knew? Meet Anthony Daniels.

The singer-songwriter, who is finishing his second year of classes at Newport’s International Yacht Restoration School, is zealous about his crafts. “Reclaiming boat wood has been a bridge for me to marry my two passions – guitars and boats. I am currently building a second guitar from mahogany planks I salvaged from Humphrey Bogart’s schooner, Santana,” Daniels said.

The guitarist began his music career in New York, playing gigs in Brooklyn while honing his songwriting chops. As endless ideas percolated in his head, he got more serious about his writing. “I focus on the story. The lyrics are very important to me. Often, there’s a dark cloud hanging in the back of my songs. I tried to shake that style, but it’s usually impossible,” he lamented. A few years ago, when it was time to pursue a simpler lifestyle, he relocated to Newport. “Some people in New York didn’t take me seriously because I had a day job,” he said. “I love the Newport music scene. It’s close knit and so supportive.”

Because he plays original works, he feels it’s important to go out and perform his songs publicly every chance he gets. When he recently played a set at the Tuesday night Wharf Pub open mic, his insightful tunes were well received by the crowd.

This week, the songsmith’s debut album, “Ramble,” (iTunes and Spotify) is being released. His unique staccato flat picking and revealing lyrics make this record a “must have.”
