There’s a new local trio comprised of a 30-year touring guitar player, plus two members of a well-known local blues band. They’ve started hosting an open mic-jam session on Thursday nights that’s really catching on. Meet The Kohaug Allstars.

Band founders guitarist Jim Devore and drummer Brian Rodrigues are no strangers to the music scene. Devore toured with the likes of Rockabilly Hall of Famer Jerry Merritt and former "Tonight Show" band-leader-trumpeter Doc Severinsen. Rodrigues, a self-taught drummer, has been playing professionally on and off for 25 years.

Rounding out the trio is bassist Jason Borden. Many locals will remember him from his days in the hot local band Mr. Chubb.

Both Rodrigues and Borden are members of the well-regarded Big Cat Blues band. The Kohaug Allstars is a side project that all three musicians enjoy immensely.

Our sound has elements of country, surf rock and rockabilly. Plus, I get to play drums,” Rodrigues said. (He is the front man/singer for Big Cat Blues, while Dave Underwood now handles Big Cat’s drumming duties).

Big Cat founder-guitarist Matt Bruneau weighed in on The Allstars. “Those guys are great, and a little crazy in a good way,” he enthused.

Besides playing a few times a month at Pour Judgement and other venues, the trio has begun hosting a Thursday night open mic-jam session at the Newport Sportsmans Club. “It’s a great time. We’re trying to re-create some of the good open mic-jam vibe from the old Billy Goode’s. All soloists and bands are welcome to come down and you might just land your own Sportsman gig,” he explained.

Be sure to catch The Kohaug Allstars every Thursday night from 7:30-11 p.m. at the Newport Sportsmans Club, 110 Connell Hwy. For more information, visit The Kohaug Allstars on Facebook.
