Trouble on the Hill

Founded in 1896, St. George’s School in Middletown is situated on 125 acres and enjoys one of the better water views of independent schools in New England. With a current enrollment of 365, the school has been coed since 1971. Prominent alumni abound, including Claiborne Pell, Prescott Bush (father of George and grandfather of George W.), Ogden Nash, Anthony Mason, and Julie Bowen. Its mission statement in 1896: “To give students the opportunity of developing to the fullest extent possible the particular gifts that are theirs and to encourage in them the desire to do so.” Today, for the parents of millennials: “Where every student is known, challenged, and inspired.” St. George’s has recently been cast in the harsh and growing spotlight of unwanted attention as charges of sexual abuse and misconduct, from 1974 – 2004, have surfaced. In recent weeks the victims, whose numbers have now passed 40, seem to have found their collective voice.
