Recent Deaths

Esther I. Hargrove, 91, of Newport, passed away Nov. 30, 2015 at Newport Hospital after a short illness. A funeral service will be held on Saturday, Dec. 5, at 2 p.m. in Hambly Funeral Home, “Brick House,” 30 Red Cross Ave. As a young woman she worked in the clerical department of the former Newport Naval Hospital until 1967 when she transferred to the Naval Air Station at Coronado, San Diego. Donations in her memory may be made to the Robert Potter League for Animals, P.O. Box 412, Newport, RI 02840 or to Heatherwood Nursing Home, Activity Fund, 398 Bellevue Ave., Newport, RI 02840.

Elizabeth F. Harrington-Sadin, 26, of Charleston, S.C. and formerly of Newport, passed away Nov. 25, 2015 in Charleston. She was the daughter of Katie Harrington- Gathmann and stepfather Kevin Gathmann, and Bertrand Sadin. Visiting hours will be Friday, Dec. 4, from 5 – 8 p.m. at the O’Neill- Hayes Funeral Home. A Mass of Christian burial will be Dec. 5 at 10 a.m. at Jesus Saviour Church, 509 Broadway. Donations in her memory may be made to the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation, jdrf.org./donate.

John K. Irwin, 73, passed away Nov. 23, 2015 at Newport Hospital. He leaves behind his wife, Karyne Wilner, and his daughter, Nicole. He owned and operated Forest Park Mobile Homes and the Redwood Management Company since 1995. A celebration of his life will be held in the spring. James G. Kelly, 72, of Portsmouth, passed away at home on Nov. 23, 2015. He leaves behind his wife, Jayne, his children, Christian Kelly (Jamie), Jill Watson (Troy), and Micaela Mack (Kiley), and eight grandchildren. He was employed with the Naval Undersea

Warfare Center (NUWC), Newport, for 40 years, retiring as Senior Science and Technology Manager in 2006. Donations in his memory may be made to the Tennis Hall of Fame, 194 Bellevue Ave., Newport, RI 02840.

Xavier Patrick McCann, 22, of Portsmouth, passed away Nov. 22, 2015 at Rhode Island Hospital, Providence. He was the son of Jennifer (Beebe) Delgado of Portsmouth, and Garry McCann of Warwick, and stepson of Paige McCann and Louis Delgado. Donations in his memory may be made to the Robert Potter League for Animals, P.O. Box 412, Newport, RI 02840.

Captain Glenn J. Secrest, USNR (Ret.), 74, of Middletown, passed away suddenly Nov. 20, 2015 at Rhode Island Hospital, Providence. He leaves behind his wife, Ellen Breede, and children Christopher Glenn Secrest (Kristine) and Lauren Secrest Howley (Chris). A private Mass and burial will take place at a later date at Arlington National Cemetery. Donations in his memory may be made to the Navy-Marine Corps Relief Society, nmcrs.org.

Christopher Silvia, 49, of Portsmouth, passed away Nov. 28, 2015. He was a longtime volunteer in Newport Hospital's Vanderbilt Rehabilitation Center and was chosen volunteer of the year in 2007. He is survived by his siblings, Marie Bacon of Middletown, Dennis Silvia of Portsmouth, Charlene Greene (Timothy) of Newport, Kerrie Schoenbucher of Portsmouth, and Barbara Sherman (Bruce) of Vermont. Services are private.
