Traditional Service Worshippers from all over Newport County attended the 41st annual Communitywide Interfaith Thanksgiving Eve Service at Temple Shalom. Clergy and choirs from various houses of worship participated in the service, which has become a tradition for many living on Aquidneck Island. The service was begun 41 years ago by Rabbi Marc S. Jagolinzer of Temple Shalom, who has worked to ensure that it has continued through the years. Neighborhood Breakfast

Swanhurst Concert

On Saturday, Dec. 5, at 8 p.m., Swanhurst Chorus will present “'Tis the Season: A Traditional Christmas,” featuring old and new carols. The concert will take place at Emmanuel Church, 42 Dearborn St. Tickets are $20 in advance, $23 at the door, and $10 for full-time students. ‘Fill the Bus’ Campaign

On Saturday, Dec. 5 and 12, from 8 a.m.-4 p.m., assist Aquidneck Island families in need by helping fill school buses with such items as nonperishable foods; hats, gloves and mittens; toiletries; laundry detergent; linens; gift cards and toys. Buses will be parked at the Stop & Shop and BJ's on West Main Road and at Gaudet Middle School on Aquidneck Ave.

Preparing Your Memorial Service

On Sunday, Dec. 6, at Trinity Church the Rev. Alan Neale, Assisting Priest, will present the second program of the series entitled "Preparing for the Inevitable (and it's not Taxes)." This week’s discussion will focus on “having the last word” in preparing your own memorial service. The program will be held in Honyman Hall from 9 - 9:45 a.m., coffee will be served and all are welcome to attend. For more information, call the church office at 401-846-0660.

Chanukah Party

Temple Shalom, 223 Valley Road, Middletown, will hold a Chanukah party for children ages 3-7 with a caretaker, Sunday, Dec. 6, 3-5 p.m. It is open to the entire community. RSVP at 401-447-0323.

Women’s Candlelight Retreat

Women are invited, in the spirit of Advent, to share in “The Coming of an Angel” for an evening of quiet reflection at the chapel at St. Mary’s Church, 324 East Main Road, Portsmouth, Tuesday, Dec. 8, from 6-8:30 p.m. A donation will be appreciated. Winter Wear Distribution

The coat drive at St. Paul’s United Methodist Church has yielded an abundance of winter wear for anyone who needs it. Pickup can be made on Warm Up Wednesdays, which are held on Wednesday afternoons from 1-4 p.m. Everyone is welcome to stop in to enjoy conversation, read and play games; a variety of refreshments will be served. Use the front door entrance at 12 Marlborough St. The next Warm Up Wednesday is on Dec. 9.

Concert for Charity

The Saint Vincent de Paul Society presents the Wakefield Concert Band performing a Christmas concert for charity at Jesus Saviour Church, 509 Broadway, on Monday, Dec. 14 at 6:30 p.m., for a $10 donation. An Advent Evening of Taizé

Prayer St. Lucy’s will offer an Advent Evening of Taizé Prayer on Monday, Dec. 14, at 7 p.m. The Taizé worship service, derived from the Taizé monastic community located in Taizé, France, involves sung and chanted prayers, meditation, periods of silence, liturgical readings, and the use of icons. Yankee Gift Swap

Temple Shalom and the United Congregational Church will hold their fifth annual Yankee Gift Swap on Tuesday, Dec. 15, at 7 p.m. Participants will bring a $5 wrapped gift for the swap.
