Elizabeth (O’Neill) Champagne, 84, of Newport, passed away Sept. 26, 2015. She was the wife of the late Maurice Champagne. Donations in her memory may be made to the Potter League for Animals, P.O. Box 412, Newport, RI 02840.

Betty (Cherry) Lorraine Jones, 75, passed away Sept. 28, 2015. She leaves behind two daughters, four grandchildren, and nine greatgrandchildren. A memorial service will be held on Saturday, Oct. 3., at 11 a.m. at the Community Baptist Church, Newport. John Anthony Marshall Sr., 72, of Portsmouth, passed away Sept. 27, 2015 at Lahey Hospital. He leaves behind six children and six grandchildren. While working on the farm he discovered his love for construction and went on to found J.A.M. Construction Company in 1966 with an Oliver 550 tractor. Calling hours will be Friday, Oct. 2, from 4 - 8 p.m. at the Memorial Funeral Home. A Mass of Christian burial will be Oct. 3 at 9 a.m. at Jesus Saviour Church. Rheta McCann McBrier, 95, passed away Sept. 23, 2015. She was the wife of the late Col. Robert W. McBrier. She leaves behind a daughter, two grandchildren, and five great-grandchildren. A Mass of Christian Burial will be Saturday, Oct. 3 at noon at St. Barnabas Church. Donations in her memory may be made to NEADS, Dogs for Deaf and Disabled Americans, P.O. Catherine “Kay” (Bradley) Kane, 92, of Newport, passed away peacefully at home on Saturday, Sept. 26, 2015.She was the wife of the late Bernard J. Kane. Born on Feb. 12, 1923, in Newport’s Kerry Hill, she was the daughter of James and Kate (Roche) Bradley of County Kerry, Ireland and sister of the late William Bradley. She is survived by her daughters, Kathleen Watterson Arnold and Maura Kane Thomas (Jason), sons, Bernard F. Kane (JeAnne), J. Bradley Watterson (Sharon), and Phillip “Tiny” Kane, and daughter in law, Deborah Watterson. She also leaves behind 11 grandchildren and 14 greatgrandchildren. She was also predeceased by her husband, Joseph P. Watterson, and her son, Kevin J. Watterson. Visiting hours will be at O’Neill-Hayes Funeral Home, 465 Spring St., Oct. 1, from 4 - 7 p.m. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held Friday, Oct. 2 at St. Joseph’s Church, Broadway, at 10 a.m. Burial will be at Newport Memorial Park, Howland Avenue, Middletown. Louis F. Nelsen Jr., 84, of Middletown, passed away Sept. 22, 2015 at Grand Islander Health Care Center. He was the husband of the late Dorothy M. (Mc- Carthy) Nelsen and the father of two daughters. He was a U.S. Army veteran.

Philip D. O’Connell Jr., 87, passed away Sept. 26, 2015. He was the husband of the late Eunice M. Cormack. He leaves behind four children and four grandchildren. He was a U.S. Marine Corps veteran. Emily Belle Oxx, 87, passed away Sept. 22, 2015. She was the wife of the late Charles H. Oxx. She leaves behind two daughters, six grandchildren, and two great-grandchildren. Deolinda G. Pavao, 90, of Portsmouth, passed away Sept. 27, 2015. She was the wife of the late Antone A. Pavao. She leaves behind seven children, 24 grandchildren, 32 great-grandchildren, and 14 great-great-grandchildren. Jeanne Farr Saalman, 87, of Middletown, passed away Sept. 25, 2015 at Rhode Island Hospital, Providence. She was the wife of the late Howard Saalman. Marion Elizabeth (Thomas) Shakarian, 86, of Portsmouth, passed away Sept. 22, 2015 at Charlton Memorial Hospital. She was the wife of the late Charles Thomas Shakarian. Christopher C. Smith, 48, of Newport, passed away unexpectedly on Sept. 22, 2015. He served in the Rhode Island Army National Guard and the U.S. Army. He leaves behind three children. Donations in his memory may be made to the Wounded Warrior’s Project, woundedwarriorproject.org.

Manuel Duarte Ventura Jr., 92, of North Kingstown, formerly of Portsmouth, passed away Sept. 27, 2015. He served in the U.S. Army during World War II. Calling hours will be Thursday, Oct. 1, from 4 -7 p.m. at Connors Funeral Home, Portsmouth. A Mass of Christian Burial will be Oct. 2 at 10 a.m. at St. Anthony’s Church.
