RECENT DEATHS

Joseph Azevedo Domingoes Jr., 88, of Middletown, passed away Sept. 11, 2015. He was the husband of Jennie (Ciavarini) Domingoes. He served in the U.S. Navy and retired as a War Games Specialist after a 35-year career at the Naval War College. He leaves behind three children and four grandchildren. Helen L. (Freeman) Fredette, 93, of Newport, passed away Sept. 13, 2015 at St. Clare Home, Newport. She was the wife of the late Robert A. Fredette. She leaves behind her children, Barbara Kelly (Kenneth) of Newport and Robert Fredette Jr. (Penny) of Portsmouth; five grandchildren; and a great-grandson. Her first job was working as a secretary at the Torpedo Station on Goat Island during World War II. Calling hours will be Friday, Sept. 18, from 4 -7 p.m. at the Memorial Funeral Home. Jose L. Gomes, 79, of Middletown, passed away Sept. 10, 2015 at Newport Hospital. He is survived by his children, Joseph Gomes Jr. (Amy) and Dalinda Aguiar (Joseph), of Middletown; five grandchildren; and a great-grandson.

Kuno Nicholas Grosskurth Jr., 88, of Middletown, passed away Sept. 12, 2015 at Grand Islander Health Care Center, Middletown. He leaves behind his wife, Carol Anne Chamblee, five children, 11 grandchildren, and five great-grandchildren. He served in the U.S. Navy for 27 years, during World War II, the Korean War and the Vietnam War. Donations in his memory may be made to the Salvation Army, 53 Memorial Blvd., Newport, RI 02840.

James J. Hassard, 63, of Middletown, passed away unexpectedly Sept. 7, 2015 at home. He leaves his wife, Rosalind (Reeves) Hassard, two sons, and two grandchildren.

Joanne (Vardakis) Hologgitas, Ph.D., 88, of Newport, passed away Sept. 14, 2015 at Newport Hospital. She was the wife of the late Constantine “Gus” Hologgitas. Calling hours will be Thursday, Sept. 17, from 4 – 8 p.m. at Memorial Funeral Home. Her funeral will be Sept. 18 at 10 a.m. at St. Spyridon Church. Annmarie (Fries) Houston, 96, of Newport, passed away Sept. 9, 2015 at Village House Nursing Home, Newport. She leaves behind her daughters, Barbara Reed of Middletown and Diane Houston of Newport, and a son, Paul Houston, of Maine; three grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren. Leo J. Nobert, 98, of Newport, passed away Sept. 11, 2015 at Grand Islander Health Care Center, Middletown. He was the husband of the late Doris (Dubeau) Nobert. He leaves behind two children. Donations in his memory may be made to the Wounded Warrior Project, P.O. Box 758517, Topeka, KS 66675.

Robert E. Phelan, 72, passed away Sept. 10, 2015 at Heatherwood Nursing Facility. Besides his wife of 43 years, Kathleen, he leaves two children, Bridget Thompson (Patrick) and Brendan Phelan (Kim), and three grandsons. Marlene (Lopes) Howard Ray, 67, of Newport, passed away Sept. 8, 2015 at home surrounded by family. She was the wife of the late James Randall Ray Jr. She leaves behind her children, Carol Medina, Howard Ray, and James R. Ray III, all of Newport; two grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren. Gertrude Ida Silvia, 91, of Portsmouth, passed away Sept. 13, 2015 at Grand Islander Health Care Center, Middletown. She was the wife of the late Charles Silvia. She leaves behind her children, Barbara Sherman (Bruce) of Vermont, Marie Bacon of Middletown, Dennis Silvia of Portsmouth, Charlene Greene (Timothy) of Newport, Kerrie Schoenbucher of Portsmouth, and Christopher Silvia of Portsmouth; two grandchildren; and a greatgranddaughter. A Mass of Christian burial will be Saturday, Sept. 19 at 10 a.m. at St. Barnabas Church, 1697 East Main Road, Portsmouth. Carole L. (Bliss) Wisehart, 73, of Newport, passed away Sept. 13, 2015, at Mass General Hospital in Boston after a battle with ovarian cancer. She leaves behind two sons and a granddaughter. A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday, Sept. 19, at the United Congregational Church, Middletown. Katharine "Kay" Worden, 90, of Jamestown, passed away Sept. 8, 2015. She was the wife of the late Dr. Frederic Worden. Locally, she is best known as the sculptor who created the famous "Newport Wave" on America's Cup Avenue. Other sculptures are at the Brick Market Place (the Hurdy Gurdy Man), the Jamestown Community Center (Swing High), Newport Hospital (the Nurses), Newport's East End Beach (Together), The Massachusetts State House in Boston (Hands) andthe Jamestown Library (Dreams of Tomorrow). Her sculptures were sold worldwide and established her as an international artist. Her work specialized in representations of children engaged in ordinary activities, featuring motion. She leaves behind five children, grandchildren, and four great-grandchildren.
