Teresa Paiva Weed The lingering heat of an August night did not prevent 200 guests from enjoying “Literacy Blooms at a Novel Evening,” the Newport Public Library’s annual August fundraiser, which this year was a delightful evening under a tent, with Bill Corcoran being recognized as honorary chair, and Event Coordinator Ruth Barge Thumbtzen and Library Director Anne Shepherd welcoming supporters, inviting them to make use of the library and take note of its many changes.

All of Newport’s community nonprofits are known by their signature fundraising events, and the Newport Public Library is no exception. As its title suggests, this year’s theme was the reinforcement of literacy in the community. Proceeds from the evening, which included a silent auction (with items ranging from luxurious hotel stays and tickets to sports events to chimney and tree-trimming services), will go towards maintaining the library’s digital resources and refurbishing the children’s and youth areas, as well as creating a welcoming environment where the library can play a greater role in encouraging higher literacy rates among our community’s youth.
