Venue Change

The Seamen’s Church Institute’s annual fundraiser, Rock the Docks will be held on Saturday, Aug. 30 on the lawn at Fort Adams. This is a change of venue from previously released information.

The event features a lobster dinner and music by Tropical Beat. Tickets are $125 per person. For more information or to purchase tickets, call 401-847-4260.

Ballet Auditions

The next audition for Rhode Island’s ballet theatre will be held at on Thursday, Aug. 13 at 7 p.m. for serious students ages 9 to 17. Audition is in the form of a class; no special preparation required. Rehearsals and classes are held on Thursday evenings. Audition fee is $20. To reserve spot, call 401-847- 5301. Dues to participate are $40 per month. Training location is at RI Ballet Arts Academy, 7728 Post Road, North Kingstown.

‘A Novel Evening’ to Support Newport Library

The Newport Public Library will hold its annual fundraising event, “Literacy Blooms at a Novel Evening” under a tent on the grounds of the library on Sunday, Aug. 16. Honorary chair William J. “Bill” Corcoran and Ruth B. Thumbtzen, the event’s coordinator, will welcome guests under the tent. Slated for 6 - 8:30 p.m., the evening will include hors d’oeuvres and desserts by Pranzi catering, complimentary beer and wine and music with Chase Ceglie, jazz saxophonist and Devon Mello on the keyboard.

A portion of the proceeds will go toward the refurbishing of the children’s and youth areas within the library as well as maintaining the library’s digital resources. The Newport Public Library is not a department of the city but an independent not-for-profit organization, which necessitates its reaching out to the community for support, regardless of the much appreciated assistance from both the city and state.

Honoree Bill Corcoran is a former president of the library’s board of trustees and a native Newporter. He is currently of counsel with the law firm of Corcoran, Peckham, Hayes and Galvin but perhaps best known for his work with Newport Tent Company.

A highlight of the evening will be a silent auction with two Celtic tickets with dinner in the owner’s dining room with a partner of the team, tickets for a Boston Bruins game with dinner at the Union Oyster House in Boston, a gondola ride, dinners and overnight stays, and many items by local artisans.

One can also support the library by participating in its 50/50 money raffle. Raffle tickets are $1 each or $5 for six and may be purchased in the lobby of the library, on the parking lot side, Monday-Friday 4-6 p.m. The drawing will be at the event on Aug. 16. Proceeds from the raffle will be equally shared between the library and the winner.

Extending Earth Day

Members of the Off Broadway Neighborhood Association and fellow neighbors have decided to start a regular cleanup on Saturday mornings along Broadway. Anyone interested in donating an hour of time can meet up with organizer Ellen Nichols at 9:30 a.m at Equality Park. Collection bags and gloves will be provided.

Annual Networking Event July 30

The Newport Interactive Marketers will hold its annual 100 percent networking event on the rooftop of the Hotel Viking on Thursday, July 30, from 6 - 9 p.m. It will be cohosted by Newport County Chamber Connections, Search Engine Marketing New England (SEMNE), South Shore Designers, Writers, and Web Folks and Providence Entrepreneurs. Sunset League Looks for Hall of Famers

The George Donnelly Sunset League’s inaugural Hall of Fame class is 20 men who shaped the league and kept it going through hard financial times in the early years. The inductees are George Donnelly, William T. Bull, Arthur Leland, Peter Integlia, Ronald Mac- Donald, Joe Johann, Duke Abbruzzi, Gardner Seveney, Sam Naham, Garland Templeton, Ray West, Gordon Ross, Vincent Integlia, George Butler, George Cozzens, and Edmund White.

VNS Volunteers Needed

Visiting Nurse Services of Newport and Bristol Counties is looking for flu clinic volunteers to greet and register clients. Clinics run September through December at many locations. No experience needed, training will be at the end of August.

Lighthouse Volunteers Needed

Volunteers are needed at Rose Island Lighthouse foundation for the month of August, Monday through Fridays. Spend the day at beautiful Rose Island and help maintain a historic and environmental site in Narragansett Bay. Transportation is provided. 21 Artists on Island Open Studio Tour

The Jamestown Alliance for Artist Sustainability is holding its second annual Island Open Studio Tour on Saturday, Aug. 1 from 9 a.m. - 4 p.m. Twenty one island artists are participating. Maps to locate them may be picked up at the Jamestown Art Center or at Clancy Glass Studio on North Road. Artists include David and Jennifer Clancy, Didi Suydam Gallery, Jillian Barber sculpture, and Alexandra Kent painting. Free and open to the public.

‘Dog Days of Summer’

People and dog-friendly dogs over eight weeks old are welcome to attend the Potter League’s annual “Dog Days of Summer” on Saturday, Aug. 8 from 10 a.m. - noon. Cool off with lots of fun activities such as Frisbee toss, sand digging contests, agility “try-it” course, photos with your dog, door prizes and other goodies.

A “paint and dabble” fundraiser for Give Kids the World Village will be held on the Hyatt Regency lawn, on Wednesdays in August, from 6 – 8 p.m. Ticket price of $40 includes art supplies and guidance in order to paint the Newport Bridge. Event is shine only.

Class of 1950 Reunion

The Rogers High School, St. Catherine Academy and De LaSalle Academy Class of 1950 will hold its 65th reunion on Wednesday, Sept. 30 at the Atlantic Beach Club and on Oct. 1 at Laforge Restaurant. (This is a date change from previous dates of Sept. 23 and 24). The cost to attend the cocktail party at the Atlantic Beach Club is $35. The dinner at LaForge is $45 per person. Rogers Class of 1960 Reunion

The Rogers High School Class of 1960 will hold its 55th reunion on Saturday, Sept. 12, at Kempenaar’s Clambake Club.
