Stellar Performance

Rajeev Ram often appeared airborne Tuesday afternoon as he derailed John Isner’s attempt at a third win at the Tennis Hall of Fame Championship. The unseeded Ram, who won the Van Alen Cup in 2009, defeated No. 1 seed Isner in three sets. The 18th-ranked Isner, who won here in 2011 and 2012, took his loss with the grace of a true champ. "I just didn't play well enough to win," he is quoted as saying on the ESPN website. Ram, ranked 161st, said Newport suits him. "We don't have anywhere else like this on tour where my game sort of fits as well as it does here," he said. "It's sort of suited to more old-school style tennis, and I feel like I can play that pretty well." Ram continued his advance in the second round on Wednesday by beating No. 144, Japan’s Yuichi Sugita. (Photo by Jen Carter)
