Coddington Cove Open Water Swim

MWR will hold open water swim sessions in preparation for the July 26 Sprint Triathlon’s swim component. Upcoming training opportunities are on Mondays, July 13, and 20, at 4:30 p.m. and Wednesdays, July 8, 15, and 22, at 11:30 a.m. The swims are open to active duty personnel, retirees, reservists, eligible family members, and DoD employees with base access. Space is limited and advance signup at the John H. Chafee Fitness Center is required. For more information, call 401- 841-3154.

Subvets Meeting

The Rhode Island Base of the United States Submarine Veterans will hold its monthly meeting on Thursday, July 16 at the R.I. Aviation Hall of Fame building (formerly USS Saratoga Museum Foundation), 6854 Post Road, North Kingstown. Officer Graduation

Officer Development School will graduate 175 new members of the staffcorpsFriday,July17,ina9a.m. ceremony on Nimitz Field. Vice Adm. Matthew Nathan, Surgeon General of the Navy, will address the graduates. For more information on either ceremony, call 401- 841-1171.

Sprint Triathlon

Naval Station Newport will host the Sprint Triathlon on Sunday, July 26. All are welcome to participate and the base will be open to the public for the event. The first wave of swimmers will hit the water in Coddington Cove at 7:15 a.m., with a 10.5-mile bike ride and three-mile run to follow. The triathlon is limited to 300 participants, and patrons registered by July 10 will receive a free T-shirt. Registration fees: military personnel and eligible family members $35; DoD civilians $50; contractors and members of the public $65; and two- and threemember teams $75. All fees increase by $10 after Thursday, July 10.

Military Appreciation Night at the Gulls

The Raytheon Corporation will sponsor Military Appreciation Night at the Newport Gulls baseball game on Wednesday, July 22, at 6:35 p.m. The Gulls will take on the Sanford Mainers at Cardines Field. Admission is free for all military personnel.

GATE 1 Closure

Gate 1, commonly referred to as the Naval Station “Main Gate” located at the end of Training Station Road, Newport, will be closed through the end of July in order to complete work on the causeway. All traffic, including pedestrian traffic, will be rerouted to Gate 2, at the end of Third Street extension. All commercial vehicle traffic is reminded to only use Gate 17 on Defense Highway in Middletown to enter and depart the installation.
