Emmanuel Church Picnic

New Pastor at Calvary

Rev. Dr. Federico G. Carmona has been appointed to serve as Calvary United Methodist Church’s new pastor beginning July 1. Carmona was born in Peru and came to the United States in 1993, becoming a citizen in 2010. After studying at Zion Bible College, Providence College and Boston University, he was ordained as an elder in the New England Conference of the United Methodist Church in 2013. Last year, he received his doctorate in Urban Ministry from Wesley Theological Seminary in Washington, D.C. He has served as pastor in Worcester, Providence, and most recently in Wellfleet, Mass.

Free Guided Church Tours

St. Mary’s Barbecue

St. Mary’s Episcopal Church will hold a country style barbecue to raise funds in support of its mission and ministry on Sunday, July 12, beginning at 5 p.m. All are welcome to enjoy a catered dinner with all the fixings and a concert by Fran McKendree. Adults are $25 and children 12 and under are $5. Tickets need to be purchased by July 5 and are available after services or by calling the office at 401- 846-9700. St. Mary’s is at 324 East Main Road in Portsmouth.

Free Organ Concerts

As a ministry of hospitality to parishioners, the Newport community, and visitors, St. Mary’s offers free weekly concerts throughout the summer months. Every Sunday, there will be half-hour to 45-minute concerts at 1 and 3 p.m. The church is located at Spring Street and Memorial Blvd. For more information, call 401-847-0475.

‘Bach and Friends at Quarter Till’

The popular “Bach and Friends at Quarter Till” weekend organ recital series takes place throughout the summer at the church of St. John the Evangelist. All are invited to take a 15-minute break to enjoy an organ meditation of music by Bach and another composer, played on the church’s 1894 Hook and Hastings organ. Music by Flor Peeters will be featured June 27-28. Watch Peter S. Berton’s hands as he plays, via video monitor. The program will be offered Saturdays at 11:45 a.m. and 2:45 p.m. and Sundays at 2:45, 5:45 and 8:45 p.m. A donation of 25 cents is requested to benefit the organ restoration fund.

First Presbyterian Church Choir

First Presbyterian Church invites anyone who wishes to sing without evening rehearsals to gather any Sunday at 8:50 a.m. to practice music for that morning’s service. First Presbyterian is at 4 Everett St. For more information, call 401-847- 1749.

St. Lucy’s Scripture Study

Scripture study at St. Lucy’s Catholic Church is led by Jane Parrillo on Tuesdays from 9:45-10:30 a.m. in the cry room. Scripture readings for the upcoming Sunday are discussed.

Summer at St. Peter’s

St. Peter’s Lutheran Church will begin its summer schedule on Saturday, July 11, offering a service at 5 p.m. Sunday worship and children’s church will continue at 9:30 a.m. St. Peter’s is at 523 Broadway.

The church is also offering a Children’s Summer Camp, “Everest: Conquering Challenges with God’s Mighty Power,” July 13-17, from 6-8 p.m. All are welcome. Sign up at the church office or call 401-846- 9567.

St. Barnabas Summer Schedule

St. Barnabas Church in Portsmouth will switch to its summer weekend Mass schedule beginning June 27. Masses will be offered Saturdays at 5 p.m. and Sunday morning at 8 and 10 a.m.

Changes at St. Mary’s and St. Augustin

Changes are being implemented at St. Mary’s and St. Augustin Catholic churches to reflect restructuring per the diocese.

In July, St. Augustin will offer Mass Saturdays at 5 p.m. and Sundays at 8 a.m. In August the Saturday Mass will begin at 4 p.m.

St. Mary’s will offer Mass Saturdays at 5 p.m. in July and move to 5:15 p.m. in August.

Sunday Masses will be held at 8, 9:30 and 11 a.m.

Daily Masses will be held at St. Mary’s Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday and Friday at 7:30 a.m. Mass is offered Thursdays at St. Augustin at 7:30 a.m.

Beginning in July, confessions will be heard Saturdays at St. Mary’s from 8-8:30 a.m. or by appointment at either church.

The day-to-day office of St. Augustin will remain at its present location until further notice; however, the billing and accounting office and the scheduling of anointing, funerals and weddings will be relocated to St. Mary’s. For more information, call 401-847-0475.

Friends of the Poor

The Society of St. Vincent de Paul, Conference of Jesus Saviour, will hold a membership ministry and informational gathering the weekend of June 27-28 in the basement of Jesus Saviour Catholic Church at 509 Broadway. The meeting will be held after the 5 p.m. Mass on Saturday, June 27, and from 8 a.m. until noon on Sunday, June 28. Members of the Jesus Saviour Conference will be there to present information and answer questions pertaining to the work they do. Those interested in the mission of assisting the less fortunate in the community are welcome to attend. For more information, call 401-846-4095. Light refreshments will be served.

Volunteer Opportunity

Gentiva Hospice is looking for dedicated and compassionate volunteers to provide companionship and one to one interaction to terminally ill patients in the community. Call Gentiva Hospice 401-738- 1492 and ask for the Manager of Volunteer Services.
