Harbor Walk Planter Project

Anyone who missed the Perrotti Park dinghy planting “launch” is invited to the King Park planting on June 14. Anyone who missed the Perrotti Park dinghy planting “launch” is invited to the King Park planting on June 14. Volunteers and the public are invited to join the Friends of the Waterfront and URI Master Gardeners for the second of three planned dinghy "launches" of the Harbor Walk Planter Project at King Park on Sunday, June 14, at 1 p.m.

The public is welcome to come by to get pointers about planting their own containers and take some time to enjoy the Harbor Walk.

“The goal is to place dinghy planters along the whole Harbor Walk to bring attention to all the public rights of way to the water. If we don’t use them, we might lose them, and we hope that never happens because the City of Newport, citizens of Newport and the other island communities, and visitors alike, would lose a treasure,” states Johanna Vietry, Friends of the Waterfront president.

The Planter Project celebrates continued public access to Newport’s waterfront using repurposed dinghies planted with locally grown, Rhode Island native plants such as Purple Love Grass, Mountain Mint, Hummingbird Sage, and Whirling Butterflies. The eight-foot rowboats are also filled with organic soil and compost.

This joint effort between Friends of the Waterfront and URI Master Gardeners is the only Newport based Master Gardener project.

Volunteer Master Gardeners will demonstrate large-scale container planting techniques and discuss design options as they create a new landscape feature in the heart of downtown Newport.

Individuals and businesses that wish to help, or like the idea of the dinghy planters and wish to donate, should contact newportwaterfront.org.

Gardeners interested in maintaining the planters throughout the summer (under guidance from URI Master Gardeners) are welcome to attend.
