Overhead Gardens ‘Planted’

Another surefire sign that summer is right around the corner is the annual hanging of flower baskets by Newport in Bloom, creating a stunning above-eye-level garden running from Bellevue Avenue down into Washington Square. The all-volunteer group has been working atop ladders for much of the week, making sure the city looks its best before summer hits its stride. The 33-year-old organization has installed the overhead baskets for more than 20 years as part of its citywide beautification efforts. Funded almost entirely by donations, the program runs at nearly $30,000. A dedicated cadre plants, hangs, and waters the baskets of beauty almost daily in the predawn hours.
