Coaches and brothers Frank and Mike Newsome, center, are congratulated by Superintendent Colleen B. Jermain, NPEF Secretary Christina Martin, Ed.D., and NPEF President Keith Tavares as the recipients of the Unsung Hero Award. The Newport Public Education Foundation (NPEF) is pleased to announce recipients of the annual Noreen Stonor Drexel Education Awards for 2015. Each year awards are presented in three categories: Friend of Education, Partner in Education, and Unsung Hero. The goal of the Newport Public Education Foundation is to help bridge the needs of students in public schools with the community and this year’s award recipients play a vital role in making that happen.

Capt. Mark L. Turner, USN, has been selected to receive the Friend of Education Award. Turner, director of the Naval Staff College, helped develop the high school’s International Studies Program by identifying and connecting distinguished international military officers from around the world as class presenters.

The Newport Partnership for Families has been selected to receive the Partner in Education Award. The Partnership is comprised of over 35 area social service organizations, businesses, and associations. Most recently, it received a $275,000 grant from the van Beuren Charitable Foundation to help address the issue of chronic absenteeism and truancy in the schools.

The Unsung Hero Award will be presented to brothers Frank and Mike Newsome. In addition to coaching varsity sports teams, both brothers support a number of community sports leagues for kids. Colleen B. Jermain, superintendent of Newport Public Schools, credits both with being available to students 24 hours a day, whenever they are needed.
