Ladies Set to Charm at St. Columba's

The Ladies of the Rolling Pin Morris dancers will make a return appearance at St. Columba's 24th annual garden party on Saturday, June 6. The afternoon of elegance runs 1-5 p.m. and the dancers will perform at 2 p.m. The only female Morris dancers in Rhode Island offer a slightly different take on the traditional dance form that originated in the Cotswold section of England in the 15th century. Customarily performed by men wielding sticks and swords in a rousing rite of spring designed to waken the earth from winter slumber, the ladies employ kitchen utensils like rolling pins and ladles in their rhythmic stepping, in nod to their time-honored roles in the kitchen. The Garden Party offers a plethora of activities with a Devonshire cream tea, special children's tea, floral festival competition, and a treasure trove of plants, books and garden ornamenture, as well as a full complement of fun for the youngsters.
